Because my parents stayed home today since most of the roads were closed and I need something to help keep my sanity in tact.

The 30 Day Meme

Okay, this is a hard one, because I can't really choose a favorite. It varies from mood to mood, but if I had to pick just one film that I could pretty much watch at any given time and enjoy it immensely, that would be:

It just makes me smile.

On snowy days like this, I quite enjoy watching the Anne of Greengables/Anne of Avonlea miniseries. I don't know why I like watching these when it snows, but I do.

Also, Rush Hour. I love it. A lot.

The fanfic in review meme! (stolen from [livejournal.com profile] dollsome) I did this last year and quite enjoyed filling it out, even though no one is friends with me for my fanfic (which means you all love me for me, so don't think I'm complaining). I just am not in the habit of praising my own fic, and I think this meme kind of pushes me to? So, I'm doing it.

This Year's Fic
1. Stride for Stride (Merlin, Uther/Morgana)
2. Soulmates (Ugly Betty, Daniel/Betty)
3. Drabbles (Psych, Lassiter/Juliet; Merlin, Uther/Morgana; The Office, Michael/Ryan)
4. Five Times Oscar Dreams of Andy (The Office, Oscar/Andy)
5. Flashes of Life (iCarly, Spencer/Sam, Sam/Freddie, Carly/Freddie, Spencer & Carly)
6. Five Reasons Why Morgana (Begrudgingly) Loves Uther (Merlin, Uther/Morgana)
7. When Bros Move On (The Office, Oscar/Andy)
8. The Totally Gay Version of Jim and Pam (The Office, Oscar/Andy, Jim/Pam)
9. How to Woo a Guy in Ten Days (The Office, Oscar/Andy)
10. Touch, Bubblegum, Anger Drabbles (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy/Giles, Giles/Anya)
11. Embrace, Forced Marriage, Repo, Mask Drabbles (Merlin, Uther/Morgana)
12. A Map For Every Occasion (Community, Jeff/Annie)
13. Mystery fic for [livejournal.com profile] camelotsolstice (pffft, like it'll be any big mystery)

01. Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?:
Oh, definitely more. Honestly, I never actually expect myself to write much. Maybe two or three stories a year, so, I did pretty darn good.

02. What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?:
Buffy/Giles. Granted, it was only 2 tiny drabbles, but still, that's more than I ever thought I would write for them. I just don't think I'm talented enough to capture their essence. Also, Giles/Anya, because I don't exactly ship them, and again, because I don't think I'm clever enough to capture their awesome banter. Also, I never would have thought I'd be writing fic for iCarly, much less watching iCarly. But, you know, the show is awesome, and it somehow inspires angsty Spam fic in me? Which is just weird, but true.

03. What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?:
Hmm... I think it is a tie between The Totally Gay Version of Jim and Pam and Flashes of Life. I think my best comedy came from the first one, and I just really, really enjoyed writing the second one because I got to invent a backstory for Spencer and then took the characters to a place that I wanted them to go post-show.

04. Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?:
Not exactly. I am not much of a risk taker at all, but this was the first year where I attempted drabbles, and I discovered that I kind of enjoy writing an entire story in one paragraph.

05. Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?:
Not really. I wish I could write the numerous Uther/Morgana fics that have been kicking around in my brain for ages, but as you all know, I angst over writing them more than I angst over writing any other pairing, so I don't see those ever getting written. I lose my confidence way too quickly where Uther/Morgana is concerned.

06. From my past year of writing, what was...

My Best Story:
I'm going to say The Totally Gay Version of Jim and Pam, mostly because I feel, structurally and characterization-wise, it was some of my best writing.

Story Most Underappreciated by the Universe:
Hmm... I am not used to getting a whole lot of praise in the first place, so it's hard to judge what was well-received and what wasn't. I was kind of sad that my set of 4 Uther/Morgana drabbles didn't get much love, but does that even count? They were drabbles. And I only liked two of them. Hmm... I'm going to go with Flashes of Life, because I was kind of proud of that fic, but the pairing is not a widely read pairing, therefore not many people read it. But the ones who did made me smile like a loon, so, I was happy.

Most Fun:
Oh jeez, pretty much all of the comedy ones. I tickled myself quite a bit with The Totally Gay Version of Jim and Pam. It was the first time that I really took advantage of the talking heads, and OH did I enjoy that.

Most Disappointing:
All of them? No, no. Probably Stride for Stride, because I felt so awkward through a lot of it, and I feel like the first half doesn't quite match the second half in quality. This is one fic where I managed to do fairly well with a narrative voice since it was porn, but I still kind of don't like this fic very much (and yet it's my most reviewed Uther/Morgana fic, but I attribute that to the fact that it's PWP). Also, my [livejournal.com profile] camelotsolstice fic didn't turn out the way I wanted it to. I just am not happy with it at all.

Most Sexy:
Stride for Stride. PORN.

Hardest to Write:
I generally stop writing when I find it hard. I'm so lazy! But out of these fics, I'd say that the Buffy drabbles were the hardest for me to write, simply because I had never attempted to do it before, and I've read SO MUCH fic for Buffy/Giles that I just cannot fathom measuring up to what's already out there.

Most Unintentionally Telling:
Probably A Map For Every Occasion. I think I maybe put too much of myself into Annie? Same with Flashes of Life. Spencer is so me that it's sad. And I think I inserted quite a lot of my own flaws and ways of talking into Andy in How to Woo a Guy in Ten Days. And any time when I write Daniel Meade (from Ugly Betty), he basically becomes me. His feelings of worthlessness and always looking for a shortcut are me to a T. Sure, he's rich and handsome and an ex manslut, but he's also kind of dim and well meaning and he will never, ever realize his self worth because he's too afraid of failure. Betty helps him with this, makes him feel important and accomplished and reminds him that it's a failure if he never tries, and I envy that so hard. So, yeah, me and Daniel are one in the same. Just... you know, he's better at socializing than I am.

Speaking of fanfic, my dorky self has been seeking out Christmas Buffy/Giles fanfics like crazy, and I know I only have like one person on my f-list that reads Buffy/Giles fic, but damn it, I am going to rec a fic a day until Christmas! Who knows, there may be some lurkers out there that love Buffy/Giles just as much as I do. So, today's rec is:

Sierra High by Gail Christison. Granted, the only actual Christmassy stuff is briefly referenced, but since I am surrounded by snow, I think this fic is suitable for the holiday. It's a post-Chosen fic, and it's got horseback riding and angst and creepy lizard werewolf things and bathing and ooooooh I love it!

Also, completely unrelated to Christmas, I whole-heartedly recommend The Blackmail Series by [livejournal.com profile] antennapedia. Now, this is an unusual pick for me, simply because I generally prefer plot over porn. I'm just not that into porn when it comes to fic (especially of the BDSM variety), but sometimes it seems like porn of some kind was a requirement for all well-written Buffy/Giles fics back in the day, so, I've been reading a lot of porn. And after awhile, it just gets tiring. But this fic? HOLY HELL, IT'S HOT. And oddly beautiful. It's just a fascinating read, and I love how much it stays in character despite the fact that the subject matter is so far from canon, but damn she makes you believe it. And what I love about this fic is that there's this beautiful romance developing underneath all this kinkiness, and I am so completely wrapped up in it. I actually read the last chapter written before I read anything else because I have this tendency to not pay attention to author's notes and so I missed that it was part of a series, and yet I fell so, so in love with just that one chapter. So, now that I'm all caught up, dear god do I love this story. I cannot wait to see how it turns out. I love how it's written in the way one would do PWP, but at the same time, there's a plot in there about self discovery and finding the person that makes you whole.
