I have a new love. That love is Sungkyunkwan Scandal. The story is awesome, the sets are beautiful, the acting is wonderful, and IT CONTAINS MY NEW FAVORITEST SLASH SHIP EVER.

I think that says it all right there, really. This is the first K-drama where I am enjoying the secondary characters even more than I enjoy the main characters/romance (and I really, really enjoy the leads, too, so, it's not like they are uninteresting. It's just that everybody on this show is so damn lovable). My favorite character though is Yong Ha, no contest. I mean, how can I not love a dude who flirts with everyone in his path?

But we all know that his heart belongs to Jae Shin:

Greatest moment in the series so far for me. I love how this ridiculously playful character suddenly gets completely serious when he sees his best friend purposefully walking into a trap. I mean, up to this point we've seen that Yong Ha cares for Jae Shin, he's always hanging around him and touching him and whatnot (and there was even that conversation with Sun Joon where he said that he's had sexual thoughts about Jae Shin, though if he was being serious I'm not quite sure), but this is the first time where we really see the depth of Yong Ha's love for Jae Shin. With everyone else it's just about having fun, but with Jae Shin, it's the real deal. He cares about him and wants to be by his side forever, and it kills his soul a little that Jae Shin doesn't quite feel the same way. It's interesting that Yong Ha is such a notorious playboy, but when it comes to his heart, it's clear that Jae Shin will always be #1 for him. And despite his claims of loving women, he gets disinterested with them so fast that it's a little contradictory. But he certainly loves the attention... Basically, I am in love with him forever and always, even though he is so clearly the trickster character in this story (luckily he seemed to break free of this trope once he became friends with the whole group, but, you know, he still likes to cause trouble purely to entertain himself).

And, hey, while I'm here, let's end this with another vid:

CLEARLY THEY ARE BOYFRIENDS.

I've wondered for a while...

How did you get started on Asian dramas? I quite enjoy reading about them, but haven't ventured out to watch any as of yet. :)

Someone on my flist actually got me started on them by comparing one of them to Betty La Fea (which I was obsessed with at the time). So, I started with Meteor Garden, which was a Taiwanese drama, which means it had a whole lot of high drama and pretty poor production quality, but I got totally wrapped up in it. But that one is certainly not the best of the best, but it contains pretty much every cliche that you will find in an Asian drama, so I guess it was a good introduction (it's also been adapted in Japan and Korea, as well as China. My favorite version is probably the Korean one (Boys Over Flowers), but the Japanese one (Hana Yori Dango) has a much faster pace and is more light-hearted). But, if you want dramas that I thought were absolutely excellent, I'd say to check out:

MARS (http://www.mysoju.com/mars/) - a Taiwanese drama, this was the second drama that I had watched and I was absolutely blown away by the quality of this one. It's such a beautiful love story, but at the same time it's quite suspenseful and a bit of a psychological thriller. This one is pretty serious and delves into a lot of issues, but it's still one of my top favorites.

IRIS (http://www.dramafever.com/drama/124/1/Iris/) - my favorite Korean drama at the moment. This is an action thriller, but it's also got romance and comedy and mystery and tragedy thrown in. It starts off a little slow, but after the first ep it gets extremely addictive.

Sungkunkwan Scandal (http://www.dramafever.com/drama/790/) - a historical drama fused with modern behaviors and language (sort of like Merlin). It's about a girl who dresses as a boy in order to get work as a writer, and eventually she ends up in a prestigious university. This one is big on the comedy and characters overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles, so I am quite in love with it. It also has an adorable romance and some beautifully emotional moments. It has a little bit of everything, so I definitely rec this one (it is currently airing though, doesn't end its run until next week)

My guilty pleasure rom-coms that maybe aren't so great but man do I love them:

I am Sam (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/I%27m_Sam) (if you want to watch this one, I can PM you with some links) - this is the drama that I keep watching over and over and over again. I am madly in love with it, even though it's not top notch by any means, but I just love the characters so darn much that I can never give them up. This drama is mainly a comedy, it's got a teacher/student romance with plenty of banter, and eventually it starts to have a bit of a Dead Poets' Society vibe (only, the teacher here is reluctant and not quite aware of his impact on the students until towards the end). This drama is goofy, but I love it.

Goong (http://www.youtube.com/user/ClusterFUCKization#p/u/123/4HnBnlmkZnE) - One of my all time favorites. It's got a bit of a historical feel even though it takes place in modern times. It's Korea if Korea was still a monarch, and this plucky, average girl becomes a princess and has to deal with the pressures of such a position while also trying to win the heart of her husband. It's pretty hilarious, so many sweet moments, but there are also a lot of heartbreaking ones too, and I absolutely adored the progression of the romance in this one. I ended up fast forwarding through a lot of the political talk, but other than that this drama was fantastic.

Coffee Prince (http://www.dramafever.com/drama/1/1/Coffee_Prince/) - this one is highly popular and pretty much everyone who watches it ends up loving it. The entire cast is so, so wonderful, and it's one of the few dramas that actually takes the time to develop its supporting characters. The main romance is wonderful. This is another "girl is mistaken as a guy" dramas, but I think this drama pulled it off better than any other that I've seen.

Ha, that is probably way more than what you wanted, but there you go! Asian dramas are especially great to watch when you have insomnia or are just completely bored and have a little bit of time to burn.

I've watched every episode that Drama Fever had, which was up to episode 16. Then I scoured the internet looking for ep 17 with English subs but had no success, so I guess I just have to wait for Drama Fever to post this week's eps (and the wait will drive me crazy. At least with Playful Kiss I could see the new eps pretty quickly since it was on Viikii)
