I don't have much to say about this ep except HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP THAT WAS AWESOME. Oh, Merlin. Oh, Arthur. Oh, Arthur/Merlin. Oh, Gaius! Oh, Uther, you utter bastard, I still can't figure out why I love you so. Oh, Balinor. Oh, Hunith (even though she never actually showed up, and yet her presence was felt in my heart). Oh, Gwen. OH, SIR LEON.
HUNITH/BALINOR, YOU GUYS. OMG, MY HEART. THEIR LOVE IS EPIC AND PURE AND TORN APART BY THAT BASTARD UTHER FOR NO DAMN GOOD REASON. UGH, UTHER! WHY ARE YOU SUCH A JERKFACE? WHY DO I LOVE YOU SO UNCONDITIONALLY?
The Merlin/Arthur scenes in this ep were so beautiful and delightful and sweet and WHY COULDN'T THE ENTIRE SEASON HAVE BEEN LIKE THIS? They kind of made me cry a little bit, I will not lie. The very ending made me cry more than a little though, but that was Merlin/Gaius. I so love the fact that Merlin still loves Gaius like a father despite the fact that he got to have an actual father for a few brief moments.
Speaking of Merlin's father, LOVED HIM. LOVE LOVE LOVE. But, as this show is wont to do, it killed him off just as Merlin fell in love with him. This show loves to break Merlin's heart irrevocably. But I love that his father is a part of him now. He'll always have him with him. MERLIN TAMING THE DRAGON, HOLY CRAP THAT WAS WONDERFUL.
The Uther/Arthur moments in this ep were quite beautiful. Despite Uther's jerkfaceness, he still gets me right in the gut with those woeful eyes and that worried expression on his face. I love the man. This cannot be stopped. But I just want to note that I sided completely with Balinor on this whole issue. Not even Uther's EPIC MANPAIN over Ygraine can gain any sympathy from me here. And yet I still love him. I just... I don't know how he manages to evoke so much love in me, but he does.
The only thing that truly disappointed me about this ep was that I wanted Arthur to see Merlin saving the day, just this once, but it didn't happen. Arthur was conveniently knocked out. It was expected, but disappointing nonetheless. I just really wish Arthur had seen Merlin's epicness with the dragon, and seen how powerful Merlin really is and how merciful he can be. How good-intentioned Merlin is. Damn it, I just want Arthur to know the true Merlin!
Okay, guess I had a touch more to say than I thought I did. Basically, I LOVED THIS EPISODE QUITE A LOT.
And now I have to go shovel the driveway. FUN. (that was sarcasm, just in case you couldn't tell) It is still snowing, by the way.
