Man-love has taken over my brain.
Aug. 25th, 2008 11:49 am1. I am alarmed at just how large my Damian Lewis tag appears in my journal. I think I'm a tad bit obsessed with the man. Maybe. Just a little. Soon it will look like:
love machine: damian lewis
My journal won't be big enough to contain the size of the tag. You watch.
2. Over the weekend, for no reason that I can imagine, I just pondered, "I wonder if there are slash romance novels. I love smutty romance novels, and I love man-love, so... why not combine them?" So I searched, and I sort of found what I wanted in Loose Id, but I'm not big on reading books on the computer, and they're a little more blunt than what I like, but they seem to be the only game in town in regards to unconventional pairings, and they sell a few prints on Amazon, but they are almost double the price of the e-books. So in my searching of Amazon, I came across these books that are part of a series called Nightrunner, and... well... I couldn't resist. Fantasy/adventure, plot focused as opposed to smut focused, a real romance among men that doesn't deter from the plot and isn't about the questioning of one's sexuality but is actually about unexpectedly falling in love... I had to buy it. So I bought the first two books in the series, because that's the beginning of their love story. And even though I technically don't have time to read them because I'm supposed to be doing other things, I'm pretty sure I'll be staying up into the wee small hours of the morning reading them. If I like them, that is. I've never read a m/m novel before, so this'll be interesting. I'm not a manga/graphic novel/comic book person AT ALL, so pretty much everything I read is completely het focused, because... well, it's hard to find anything else, so this will be a new experience for me. And the series actually has a fandom with really pretty fanart, so that's another plus.
3. I've rented Queer as Folk from Netflix, because it's been ages since I've seen the series, and apparently I am on a man-love kick, so I watched disc 1 last night, and OMG! I forgot how much I utterly adored this show. It's probably responsible for me falling in love with slash. But I forgot how funny it was, and how much love there is between the characters, and all the drama and unrequited love and self-loathing and self-loving and heartbreak and... GAH! I love this show. One thing I didn't forget was all the SEX! And how annoying Michael is. I still find him annoying, but only when he's around Bryan. You would think I'd ship Michael/Bryan like burning (ridiculously loyal best friend/complete asshole, opposites, unbreakable bond, unrequitedness), but Michael turns into such a whiny jerk over Bryan. Ugh. Also... I forgot how much I loved Ted's unrequited yearning for Michael, and how it kills him to see Michael so worked up over Bryan all the time. And Michael is actually freaking adorable when he's not angsting over Bryan. Also, I remember not liking Bryan at all when the series was originally on, but I have to say, I absolutely adore him this time around. Complete sex fiend, so frustratingly confident in himself, can get a guy with just a look, was all tender and loving with his baby, does whatever he wants when he wants... oh yeah, I like him. I think I missed the pilot episode, because I really didn't remember any of it, and that ep really showed what Bryan is all about, so perhaps if I had seen the pilot first, I would have liked him better the first time around. Anyway, I remember finding Bryan/Justin kind of annoying, but also kind of intriguing, because Bryan's such a cynical manwhore determined to not love anyone, and Justin's such a young, innocent, heart-on-his-sleeve person who falls in love with Bryan at the drop of a jock strap and he's determined to make Bryan fall in love with him. Both of them say whatever is on their mind without really thinking about it. The age gap. And Justin is the only person to ever make Bryan ponder about becoming a boyfriend type. And... their dynamic really reminds me of House/Cameron, which is weird, but true (you know, if Cameron was a boy and had mad mad sex with House all night long). And Emmet! Oh, Emmet, I still love him to pieces. He and Ted were my favorites back in the day, and they still are. Although, I remember the later seasons kind of messing Ted up and he hurt Emmet and I didn't like that, and then we moved, so I didn't have Showtime anymore, so I never did see the last season. But... anyway, I completely forgot that Ted used to be in love with Michael. And oh, how I love him being so miserable over the fact that he can't have him. So, I'm enjoying my rewatch of Queer as Folk. And the best part? I get to fast forward through the lesbians. Booyah! They are so ridiculously boring. Thank goodness The L Word showed that lesbians aren't so boring that they make you want to claw your eyes out.
OH! Also, Michael's mother is also Michael's mother on Burn Notice. And she even wears the same cheap hoop earrings. How freaky is that?
4. My nephew's birthday party was pretty fun. I swam my little heart out. And I stuffed my face with eggs and donuts and cake. And then I was sick. I don't know what happened, but I felt slothish the rest of the day, and yesterday I was a little better, but still having digestion problems, and today it's the same. But after the pool party I had trouble keeping my eyes open, or even sitting up. Luckily I was somewhat better by the time we went out for my mom's birthday, but that's when I started having the digestion problems. So not sure what's going on there. But as you can see, I occupied my sick time with ponderings of manlove romance novels and Queer as Folk.
5. I watched the LOCI finale, but was completely confused because I haven't watched enough of the previous seasons, but I guessed the killer pretty much the second we saw him. So... not a surprise for me. But I did enjoy the honeymoon suite bit. Goren definitely gave Eames a "SCORE!" look. You know it. Sadly their moment to get it on was ruined by Nicole's heart on the bed. Blerg.
6. My mom wanted to see The Bucket List, so I rented it for her, and... I love Jack Nicholson, and I love Morgan Freeman, but I do not love movies about old age and cancer. It forces me to think of how I'll deal with my parents' death, and that's not something I like to think about. And my dad thinks about his death far too often already, he doesn't need a movie to make him think about it even more. But my mom (who used to be a Hospice nurse) likes those kinds of things. It was a tearjerker, of course, and it was a great story of friendship and living your life to the fullest and loving what you've accomplished, but not my kind of movie.
7. Toby Keith has a new movie out, named after Beer for My Horses, and... it's actually getting good reviews. And now I really, really want to see it. Broken Bridges was so so, but Beer for My Horses is an all-out comedy, so it probably is fairly good, because Toby's pretty hilarious. But I suspect it's comedy of the bafoonery kind, which I enjoyed when I was 5. And still do.
8. Am I crazy for wanting Toby/Damian slash? Wait... don't answer that.

I think Damian's pretty impressed by the size of Toby's fist. Just sayin'. I predict that I will be picturing these two when I read the Nightrunner books, because I'm crazy.
