Day 30 - Your favorite ship forever and ever and ever?

Um... I HAVE NO IDEA. Oh, meme, the very fact that I am doing you should tell you that I jump around from ship to ship like it's going out of style. I think perhaps it's Buffy/Giles, because those two really did a number on me, and I think that they will forever seduce me with their repressed emotions and their forbiddeness and their potential for both happiness and epic angst (and epic sex. YEAH, I SAID IT). I mean, the subtext that this show gave us to work with was phenomenal, and I think it'll always have me wondering if that subtext was intentional or not. There are so many what-ifs with this ship that the possibilities are pretty endless, and even though I've read countless Buffy/Giles fics, I always manage to come across an idea that is new to me and completely exciting, and heck, with these two, I even love the tried and true fanfic cliches (in fact, I actively search for those sometimes. I will never, ever tire of reading Buffy/Giles get trapped on a deserted island fics. NEVER).

ALSO, THEY'RE BOTH KIND OF BADASS. Oh, I love them. They will forever be the parental units of the Scoobies to me. I know that people like to make Giles out to be Buffy's father (including the novelizations), but gosh, Buffy and Giles have always been such a team that that just never made sense to me. They were the leaders, they kept everyone in line, they kept each other in check, they supported each other in everything, and whenever they broke up (so to speak) their little makeshift family completely fell apart. THEY WERE TOTALLY MARRIED, OKAY? But then they got divorced and it was really depressing. Especially since Giles was supposed to be the one man who would never leave Buffy. The majority of Buffy's emotional turmoil during seasons 6 and 7 came from her rift with Giles. I mean, yeah, the whole being pulled out of heaven thing was a bitch, but Giles leaving her? That was devastatingly, earth shatteringly awful. And she became a total and utter mess without him. BECAUSE SHE LOOOOOOVES HIM. SHE CAN'T LIVE WITHOOOOOOOUT HIM. And I choose to believe that Giles was a complete mess without her, too (and, judging by the other times that he was without her that we actually did see, it's a pretty fair estimation).

BUFFY/GILES IS EPIC. END OF STORY. Also, end of meme. :'(

Question. Why is it so damn hard to find OT3 icons of Stefan/Elena/Damon? Heck, just finding good Stefan and Stefan/Elena icons is wicked hard. Clearly the fandom preference is Damon/Elena (but the Damon/Elena comm really seems to hate Stefan, and just... I wouldn't be able to take that, so I didn't join, though I may crack soon if I want to read Damon/Elena fic). I only have three eps left of Vampire Diaries, by the way. *cries* This show is so fantastically good that I cannot quite believe it. Every episode is like one big thrill ride and I cannot get enough. I like that it goes for more of a horror/thriller style than a comedy style, gives it a very different feel from shows like Buffy and True Blood (though it still has its fair share of comedy, which is lovely), and the execution of the plot is beyond amazing (I am so not used to that with vampire shows). The further into the show I get, the more I OT3 the heck out of Stefan, Elena, and Damon. I just can't see how you can ship one without the other, it just can't be done (or, it can, judging from the very insistent Damon/Elena comm), but, you know, Elena can't be in a relationship with Stefan without Damon being boyfriendly with her too, and, well, Elena isn't crazy enough to go off and have a relationship with Damon and completely forget about Stefan. Just not going to happen (and, despite Damon's careless demeanor, he really can't live without his baby brother). I must say though that the later eps of season 1 have me really falling for Damon/Elena. I think the moment that sold me was Damon looking into Elena's eyes and desperately telling her that he couldn't protect her and rescue Stefan if she went in with him, and he did this little hair stroke that seemed to comfort her, and it was beautiful and amazing and so very human and even Saltzman could see that Damon has very real feelings for Elena. And as if that wasn't enough, they made me positively swoon during their dance at the Miss Mystic Falls thingy, so, yeah, I'm sold on them, definitely. I wasn't sure if I could be swayed for awhile there since Damon was so genuinely in love with Katherine (which made me think he only had a superficial interest in Elena), but after the tomb episode, it became clear that Damon really does have this weird, trusting relationship with her where she truly has become important to him, and somehow it seems so natural that Elena seems equally protective over Damon even though she knows he kills people without a second thought. So, definitely an interesting relationship there. And clearly Elena's love is with Stefan, but she's got this whole other thing with Damon that is becoming as equally intense and somehow he's been more dependable for her than Stefan has, which is just insanity. I don't know, I don't know. I guess I lean more towards Elena/Damon shipping-wise, but at the same time, Stefan and Elena have that epic love thing happening for them, and unlike most vampire love stories, this one is actually kind of healthy? Or at least it was until Stefan got addicted to human blood again... I don't know. OT3 FOREVER, BECAUSE I SIMPLY CANNOT CHOOSE. And because Damon and Stefan's relationship is quite epic in its own right, therefore it cannot just be pushed aside in the name of romance. OT3!

Anywho, it's kind of interesting how this fandom and the True Blood fandom are so very against the broody reformed vampire (and even the Buffy fandom is to an extent, though Angel is far more popular than Bill and Stefan, but the Buffy generation seems to have convinced the younger generation that it's cool to fall for the ridiculously violent yet charmingly snarky badboy vampires while it's just so totally lame to like the broody ones. Because UGH, who wants to be around a buzz kill like that, am I right? And yet millions and millions of young girls cream their pants over Edward Cullen, the lamest of the lame broody vampires. Had there been an Eric or a Damon or a Spike in that series, Edward would be far less popular than he is. His only competition (from my understanding) is that Jacob werewolf fellow, who seems as equally lame as Edward is, so I'm not surprised that they seem to have an equal amount of fans). But... yeah, in the case of Vampire Diaries, I have so totally fallen for the ridiculously violent snarky badboy vampire, but only because he is utterly delightful and beautiful beyond words. Lookswise, Stefan just doesn't appeal to me, so... that might be part of it. Shallowness prevails! But I still ♥ Stefan and his (mostly) steadfast determination to live without hurting any humans. He tries so hard, and he's all gentlemanly and sweet and lovely and understanding, but he's also got this serious badass in him that he keeps hidden away and I freaking love him. But Damon... oh do I love Damon and his wicked, wicked ways. But I think what really makes Damon a sympathetic character is that we get these tiny glimpses into his humanity, and he's so... fragile when he actually feels things. Guh, I love him.

I am in love with The Vampire Diaries, is what I'm trying to say.

The 30 Day Shipping Meme
Day 28 - A pairing that you will never understand?

I think this one goes to House/Cuddy. No matter how hard I've tried in the past to see its appeal, I just don't get it. My f-list loves them, and, you know, on paper they are pretty much everything I love in a ship, but I just don't feel the chemistry at all, and more often than not their behavior towards each other offends me rather than excites me. For many seasons I saw nothing there but House wanting to get into her pants and being obscene about it, and Cuddy very intelligently refusing his advances, but somewhere along the way Cuddy got giggly over him and House suddenly had deep-seated emotions for her and the shoddy writing just made me want to puke. I just... I DON'T GET IT. I've tried so hard, I've read my f-list's lovely picspams and manifestos and what have you, I've watched their vids, and yet... House/Cuddy still fails to make sense to me. I think it will forever fail, mostly because the show has tried to make them out as the epic love story but had to retcon the first two seasons in order to do it, and when shows do that, it never sits well with me. But I think it mainly comes down to chemistry, and chemistry is such a subjective thing that I can't say that they don't have it, it's just that they lack the chemistry that appeals to me.

1x22 - The Art of Discourse

To begin with, Jeff/Britta and Pierce/Shirley are my least favorite team-ups on this show, and this ep focused heavily on both. Secondly, even the Troy/Abed stuff fell flat for me, and that never happens, so, that bummed me out. Mostly though, I abhorred that stupid duh-off scene in the cafeteria. Hated it with a burning passion, worst thing this show has ever done. Just... ugh, I really hated this ep. It was very disjointed and the jokes were tiring and it didn't have enough ensemble scenes. This show just doesn't work right if you split up the ensemble like that. Worst offense of all? There was barely any Annie. So, two thumbs down to this stinking episode.

What song are you currently addicted to?

Which, naturally, reminds me of Jeff/Annie, because I am currently obsessed with them. No, but really, I have had this master plan for awhile now to make a Jeff/Annie drabble fanmix (you know, where you write a drabble for each song on the fanmix), and this idea was mostly perpetuated by this song, but, you know, I fail at following through with things, so I doubt that said drabble fanmix will ever be completed, but one can dream, right? (pfft, no one would like my mix anyway since I would stubbornly make it mostly country songs)

So, I finished It Might Be You tonight. The ending/reunion was way less dramatic than I was thinking it would be, but they were apart for so freaking long that I didn't even care, I was just over the moon to see them smiling at each other again, but I was quite angry over the fact that Lawrence had a romance with Cielo's sis-in-law and they totally got to kiss on the lips several times, while Cielo and Lawrence only got one stinking kiss in the entire series and it was at the very end, in slow motion, at their wedding. WTF? Okay, yes, I swooned at said kiss, but still. And now I am sad, because all I have left to watch of the John Lloyd/Bea team-up is the last third or so clips of Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay and then I will have watched their entire resume of projects together. WHAT AM I GOING TO OBSESS OVER AFTER THAT? TELL ME! I'm not ready to stop swooning over the epicness that is John Lloyd and Bea. I'm just not. Actually, I will probably end up rewatching I ♥ Betty la Fea yet again, because that's what I do, but I also kind of want to rewatch Book 1 of Maging Sino Ka Man, because it feels like I moved through that one way too fast and so much plot was happening in that one that I probably missed a lot of their little moments. And of course I've been watching their films over and over again (namely Close to You, which I don't think I will ever get tired of).

All right, in fandom news that you guys will actually (maybe) pay attention to, IT'S PIERCE WEEK ON [livejournal.com profile] community_tv! I think I am inappropriately excited about this, especially since barely anyone is participating. WHAT UP, FANDOM? GIVE PIERCE SOME LOVE, DAMN IT! I shouldn't reprimand. I tend to ignore any fanworks that are not Jeff/Annie related, but this is Pierce we're talking about! I need me some Pierce fanfic (and yeah, I couldn't resist leaving a Pierce/Britta prompt, which I know for a fact will never get filled since most people find Pierce gross and would never inflict that horror on Britta, but whatever, PIERCE IS A SEXY BEAST and Britta is one hot mess with Daddy issues). Also, I will never, ever get tired of Modern Warfare trailers. Ever.

Joyce Summers
, simply because of the way the show handled everyone's grieving process. My god, that episode was harsh, and I'm pretty sure I used up an entire tissue box with that one. Anya's reaction especially got the tears going, because her viewpoint on the death was so much like a child's that it just completely broke down all my defenses (if I had had any left at that point. Dawn's scene made me a complete wreck, too).

Honestly, the majority of my film collection consists of guilty pleasures, but I think I'll go with Green Card, because it's pretty dated and the romantic hero is Gerard Depardieu and the dramatic parts are quite laughable and it's Gerard Depardieu, and yet I get so wrapped up in it that it's just sad:

Day 14 - A film that disappointed you

The awfulness of Rush Hour 3 kind of bummed me out, especially since Rush Hour 2 was so hilarious. I think it was just a product of the film coming out almost 10 years after its predecessor. The franchise's bankableness was past its prime, Jackie and Chris weren't as popular as they once were, and they just didn't have the spark that they had had in Rush Hour 1 and 2 (and both looked so much older than they had in Rush Hour 2, and I believe the film took place only a few months later, but I could be wrong. I only watched it twice). Anyway, it was so damn mediocre that I really can't remember a thing about it except for the scene where Jackie and Chris act like a lovesick couple that have just broken up. I don't even want a Rush Hour 4. Usually with Jackie Chan films I can enjoy each and every sequel that he churns out, but... *sigh* There's just no going back to the epicness that was the first two Rush Hours.

Day 15 - Favourite film sequel

Er... Rush Hour 2. *ahem*

Day 16 - Favourite film character

Hmm... you know, I am SO decisive about my favorite TV characters, but with films I'm usually in it for the actors more than anything. Goodness, this is hard. I guess, based purely on my love for the character, the first one that comes to mind is Cal Naughton Jr. from Talladega Nights. IDEK, I just love the dude. How could I not? SHAKE AND BAKE.

The Genetic Opera, I made some animated GIF's of Anthony Head, and I had entitled the entry "Head Porn" and went on to say, "Head porn is the greatest porn of all." [livejournal.com profile] awakencordy got a kick out of that and MADE ME AN ICON OF MY OWN QUOTE! How awesome is that? I will probably never, ever delete this icon, 1) because it speaks the truth, and 2) because someone actually quoticoned me! I love it.

BECAUSE IT'S TOTALLY TRUE. Uther and Morgana have never been more married than in that hall walking scene. Uther is patronizing and Morgana is eye rolly and they're both being snarky and then they're all affectionate with each other and Uther walks away with a big smile, and it just has a very domestic feel to it.

COMMUNITY! This show has a lot of great quotes, but this is by far the most useful one. Well, either this one or "To me, religion is like Paul Rudd. I see the appeal and I would never take it away from anyone, but I would also never stand in line for it." (coincidentally, that is EXACTLY how I feel about Paul Rudd) Anyway, this quote happens in Debate 109 (greatest episode ever), where the basketball team (that's really gay) barges into the gymnasium in the middle of the debate and Professor Whitman turns around and exclaims "By Zeus, what sort of jackassery is this?!" It's pretty hilarious.

BUFFY/GILES!!!! Oh, I could wax poetic about these two ALL NIGHT. But I will try to contain myself. I just really, really love this scene. Giles is getting ready to tell her goodbye, and Buffy has NO IDEA, and he is basically dying inside because he loves her and wants to be a part of her life but he figured out in season 4 that he couldn't be what he wanted to be nor could he be whatever the heck she wanted him to be and their relationship was just one big old undefined mess, and he was feeling useless, and then Buffy starts saying everything he's been thinking and he can barely breathe because he thinks she's telling him goodbye, and then out of blue Buffy says, "I need to know more. About where I come from, about the other slayers. I mean, maybe ... maybe if I could learn to control this thing, I could be stronger, I could be better. But ... I'm scared. I know it's gonna be hard. And I can't do it ... without you. I need your help. (pause) I need you to be my Watcher again," and then he just exhales and is holding in the tears and he has this smile and it's the most beautiful thing in the world. And just like that they are fixed. He's her watcher, she's his slayer, and that's all they need to know. They were so in tune during season 5, so co-dependent, so coupley! It was a beautiful thing. I can't get over how much more boyfriendy Giles was to Buffy than Riley was. Especially any scene where Giles and Buffy were talking to each other on the phone. HIS SMILE, OMG. He was so, so in love. I don't care what anyone says, the man was madly IN LOVE with her and season 5 was the happiest/most at peace Giles that we ever got to see, and it's precisely because he got to be so involved with Buffy, and she treated him as an equal, as her partner, rather than someone to be forgotten or an annoying authority figure.

Speaking of Buffy, I just got around to reading Vol. 5 of the comics, and I have to say that that was the best the comics have been so far, particularly the Buffy/Andrew adventure (this arc was written by Jane Espenson, so it is no surprise that she's written the most delightful Andrew interactions in the whole comic book series). I had already read the Giles/Faith one ages ago since I couldn't wait for the compilation, so, I am still meh about that one, the one where the last watcher (other than Giles) was feeding children to the demon that was keeping the vampires away and he was all "Buffy ignored you for YEARS. It's HER fault that Jenny Calendar died! You mean NOTHING to her!" and Giles is all GRR face but kind of sad because he's felt that he means nothing to Buffy for a long time now and they haven't spoken in forever but he still goes to save Faith and even though he doesn't say it he still loves Buffy more than anything. I REFUSE TO BELIEVE OTHERWISE. And the rest of the arc has so many throwaway moments where people mention Giles around Buffy or do something Giles-ish and she ACTS LIKE HE DOESN'T EXIST. I just translate this to: Giles hurt Buffy when he chose Faith over her, and so now she thinks she means nothing to him, and it's easier to ignore his existence than accept that he doesn't love her anymore. CLEARLY BOTH BUFFY AND GILES ARE DOOFUSES. Why do they never learn that their love for each other is deep and eternal? They may not always understand in what way they love each other, but any way you look at it, there is love there on both sides. AND THEY BOTH REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT. They both just wallow in self-loathing and deem themselves not worthy of the other's love. OH, THEM. I don't think they'll ever learn. But anyway, their separation has been built up in all 5 arcs, so you would think that their reunion in the next arc would be epic (but it's not. From what I read on the internet, it looks like it pretty much gets brushed aside).

Wow dudes, it feels like it's been forever since I've gone on about Buffy/Giles like that.

Dollhouse. Kind of predictable? In a character sense, I mean, not exactly plot-wise.

I guess I'm in a Buffy mood, because I've gone and fulfilled the Buffy prompts that were left for me. I have never, ever written for this fandom, so, these were actually pretty fun to contemplate. Hopefully you all enjoy them:

Buffy/Giles - Touch )

Giles/Anya - Bubblegum )

Buffy/Giles - Anger )

I kind of defeated the rules of a drabble for that second one, but oh well. It had to be done.

I KNOW YOU BFI MOFOS ARE OUT THERE. Obviously meeting Anthony Head was TOO MUCH for you all to handle. I KNOW AT LEAST ONE OF YOU MET HIM! I saw the proof in this post (scroll all the way down to see the most adorable ASH-posing-with-fans pic ever) where the person said, "...and an awesome fan took a picture of us with him for us. I didn't get your username, but you were in an Uther and Morgana shirt that I think you drew?" It is so sad that I probably know EXACTLY who she is talking about. Or at least I have a 1 in 4 chance of being correct. And it made me squee like a mofo (this is my new favorite word, by the way) because it means MORE ASH PICS will be gracing my f-list soon. I CANNOT WAIT! *is embarrassed over how excited I am to live vicariously through my f-list* I am quite proud of myself for scrolling past all the detailed descriptions of the premiere, but I did look for Uther spoilers, and no one really spoke of him, which makes me sadface, but oh well, there are plenty of pics of ASH giggling during the Q&A, so I'm good. Also, Bradley James was frickin' sexy in that weird sweater. Good lord, he actually managed to distract me from ASH for about .05 seconds.

Even better than the BFI write-ups? THIS. Oh god, ASH, please never stop being giggly over everything ever! Most adorable man alive, no contest.

Also, Buffy/Giles fic rec: Tinsel by JBG. I generally love most anything by this author, and I am shocked that I hadn't read that before. It was so, so lovely. And I am still slowly marathoning season 5 Buffy/Giles, so I wanted a sweet story from that season, and this one did not disappoint. Speaking of season 5, I think I can safely say that "Family" is my absolute favorite Buffy episode. It's a little odd that this one's my favorite considering the fact that it's about Tara rather than the main cast and nothing earth shattering happens, but ooooooh does it get me right in the heart. It never fails to make me cry, and the fact that I watched the whole ep rather than just fastforwarding through the non-B/G scenes proves that I love it a ridiculous amount. In fact, the Buffy/Giles is fairly low-key in this ep, but I think what I love about season 5 in general is that Buffy/Giles is always there but it's so subtle and normal that it would be hard to catch if you're not looking for it. In "Family", I just love how Buffy and Giles are clearly the mother and father of this ragtag bunch that has become a family, most notably in the scene where they're all moving Buffy's stuff out of her dorm and she calls Giles out for just standing around, and he says he sees his role as more paternal where he points and shouts things, then he points and shouts at Xander and Riley for fighting and threatens them and they ignore him, then Buffy makes the same threat and they stop. And Buffy and Giles just keep looking at each other. All the time. For anything. And at Tara's birthday party, in every single shot Giles is shown talking with Buffy, laughing with Buffy, standing near Buffy, basically being her boyfriend. But then Riley shows up, and Buffy and Giles are at a table laughing and whatnot, then Riley brings over their drinks and Giles's whole demeanor changes, he backs off a little bit, looks at Riley sideways, and then basically tries to ignore his existence. And then Willow and Tara have their scene at the end that makes me cry like the big old sap that I am. I still think they were most beautiful canon romance on that show. They do not get enough love. I liked Oz and all, but Willow/Tara owns my soul, completely. THEY ARE SO BEAUTIFUL.

Erm... clearly my Anthony Head obsession has gained a second wind.

For some odd reason I haven't been in the blogging mood. I think that's a first for me. Usually I blab about anything and everything, but this week I've just been going *siiiiigh* when I think about expressing my undying love for anything. I don't know. In fact, that's pretty much been my reaction to doing anything since I got back from vacation. I should be grocery shopping right now, but instead I am doing a meme. Because they are fun. And grocery shopping is not. But uh... we will be out of most of our food for the weekend, so... excuse to go out to eat, woohoo!

Anyway, meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] awakencordy (who was also lovely enough to provide the code for the meme):

01. The Office

03. 30 Rock
04. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
05. Torchwood

I assure you that I will be up to 20 by the end of tomorrow. I wouldn't put it past me.

Anywho, you know what's frustrating, yet glorious? Finding a fic where you want oodles of fic based on the supporting characters of that fic. For example, When She Was Bad by Julie Fortune. This was sort of gen fic, but sort of Buffy/Giles and slightly Buffy/Spike and Giles/Jenny, but mostly Spike/Dru and Buffy/Angel, and the concept of the alternate world was so ridiculously glorious that I want an epic based on Spike and Dru and their crazy love story and Dru being a kickass yet slightly insane vampire slayer, with Buffy and Giles being the ridiculously sinister Big Bad. I generally don't read a whole lot of fic that isn't focused on Buffy/Giles, but I so want to read Spike/Dru as this renegade watcher and slayer, with Spike being the noble watcher who feels like a total screw up and has to hold in his feelings for his slayer, and there's this unspoken thing between them and Dru is just as nutty as she is when she's a vampire, and she's the one who had this epic love with Angel, and vamp!Giles and vamp!Buffy are going at each other like rabbits and digging their evilness, and just... I WANT MORE! MORE MORE MORE! You would think I'd want more on what happens after Giles learns about what his vamp self did to Buffy (and she enjoyed), but... no. I want more Spike/Dru in the role of Buffy/Giles, only... they are still very much Spike and Dru. It was an epically awesome fic.

Another frustrating thing? Finding a fic that I enjoyed immensely, made me smile and giggle and cry like a loon through the whole thing, and... the author's account no longer exists, therefore I can't find more fics by said author. ARGH! Such is the price I pay for getting into a mostly dead fandom. But, anyway, the absolutely wonderful Buffy/Giles fic that I rec to all:

Where You'd Least Expect it by [livejournal.com profile] texaslawaggie

It was unique and hilarious and lovely and beautiful and I adore angsty-schmoopy post series fics. They are my favoritest, probably because the authors have the freedom to create a whole new world for Buffy and Giles that is generally happy and they can rebuild their relationship and be closer than ever. And this fic did the whole "best friends secretly in love but too stupid to tell each other" thing, which I am a total sucker for. Hence my ridiculous love for such films as When Harry Met Sally and Two Weeks Notice.

I don't know why, but I've been in an angsty-schmoopy Buffy/Giles mood like crazy, so naturally I've been working my way through Gail Christison's fics, because seriously, no one does the epic B/G romances better than her, and... I fell in mad love with this fic: Destiny's Doorstep. I was up until the wee hours of the morning a few days ago reading that, because I am insane and read fics when I should be sleeping (especially on holidays when I know my parents will wake me up at 7:00am), but that's like... the only time when I can read fics, and this one had me entranced. I just love how this author slowly builds up the romance, throwing in little details that are typically overlooked by most authors. So, yeah, I dug that one. For some reason Giles and Buffy in the outdoors ALONE always makes for a good read by this author.

And... I've been neglecting EVERYTHING ELSE fandom-wise, so I apologize profusely for ignoring other fanfic. I just... Buffy/Giles. They turn me into a squishy blind squee monster. And I am still hopelessly searching for Buffy/Ripper AU fic where somehow Giles never goes back to the watcher's council and stays a rebellious, pot-smoking rocker who is still *destined* for Buffy and Buffy is left without a watcher and she knows she needs one and she's royally pissed off when they tell her where her supposed watcher is and she goes to confront him and tell him to get his butt in gear, and he answers his door all groggy and half-dressed and bed-headed and he's got a cigarette in his mouth and groggily looks Buffy up and down and he's like, "Look, love, I'm a little beat, but you're welcome to come back later," (basically undresses her with his eyes) and Buffy is all offended and she's like, "Ew, what are you, like, 40? Please," and he's like, "Well aren't we proud? If it's not a tumble you want, then why are you here, little girl?" and then Buffy kicks his ass and drags him back to Sunnydale and they have a wonderfully snarky, UST filled relationship that ends in Giles becoming a little more Giles-like over the years because he's good at being a watcher and Buffy falls in love with him because she sees the man behind the failing rocker persona. WHY DOES THIS NOT EXIST? WHY? Or if it does, WHY CAN I NOT FIND IT?

Oh god. I just spent my weekend reading this super spectacular Giles/Buffy saga called The Debriefing Series by Ruth. OH GOD. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me all tingly, the characterizations were pretty awesome, and ooooooooh lordy were the porn scenes beautiful. I don't typically like reading B/G fics with smut because there are only so many ways that you can write a sex scene, so it gets tiresome, but good lord does this author capture all that is great about a sex scene. Aaaaaah, it was wonderful. But it wasn't about the sex, it was about Giles coping with the loss of Buffy and his regret at never exploring the depth of his love for her, and then it's about Giles' undying love and devotion to Buffy even through her death that ends up bringing her back, and then it's about Giles believing in Buffy's newfound love for him, and then it's about love enduring through persecution and heartbreak and OH GOD, IT IS SO, SO BEAUTIFUL! Just... there is so much emotion in this piece, and even though it's highly romantic (well, you know, in a practical way, because this is Giles and Buffy that we're talking about), I wouldn't even fathom to call it cheesy. It's just so raw and full of self-discovery and I love, love, love it. So much. I'm pretty sure I'd read anything I could find by this author. In fact, I read a few gen pieces that have very slight Giles/Buffy subtext (about as much as the show gives us) and they were so absolutely perfect. Found both of these through [profile] giles_fic_recs:

Airlines by Ruth. This one is set post season 5, as Giles is flying home to England after Buffy's death. This one is from an outsider's POV, and it somehow so beautifully captures Giles' character to perfection in this unique way, and GAH, once again the emotion is so palpable that you just feel all the sorrow and loss in Giles' life. And the ending killed me. KILLED ME. So, so beautiful.

Untouched by Ruth. This one is set in season 7, right after everyone had kicked Buffy out of her own home and she ended up spending the night with Spike. Everyone has someone, everyone but Giles, and he feels useless and unwanted and alone and foolish for being so dedicated to a mission that no longer has a place for him. And he hates himself for still loving Buffy after all she's said to him. For still holding out this niggling hope that she'll see just how much he loves her. And he wants her forgiveness. And... he hates Spike. Obviously. And... Andrew provides some lovely comic relief. This one was so very wonderful and it's what I hope was going through Giles' mind in that part of season 7. It makes the Giles/Buffy chasm not quite as heartbreaking as the actual show made it, but still tragic nonetheless.

I just... okay, season 7. I don't hate it, but I hate what it did to Buffy and Giles, and I am still bitter that there was never any real closure there, and I hate that it made Giles look selfish and didn't successfully give me his side of the story and I didn't really understand his actions until debating it with other people, and looking at his character in past seasons, all signs point to "Everything he did was for Buffy. He didn't support overthrowing her leadership, he just didn't stop it either. It wasn't that he didn't believe in her anymore, it was that he didn't believe that she believed in herself anymore," but the actual season did not tell me any of that and instead says that his pride was hurt by the fact that Buffy had surpassed him and so he refuses to support her at every turn, so I enjoy fics that remind me that yes, Giles was still Giles in season 7. It just takes a little digging to find him. So much of Giles' pain in season 7 was complete subtext, so it takes repeated viewings to understand his real motives in pushing Buffy away and then wanting to pull her back in when she starts drifting too far away from him. And of course the whole Spike fiasco not really being about Spike at all for either of them when you really get down to it. Well, it was that Giles hated Spike and feared that he'd hurt Buffy and it tortured him that Buffy had feelings for yet another vampire and repeatedly chose Spike over Giles, but... it ended up becoming about Giles not trusting Buffy's judgment and Buffy being hurt beyond repair that Giles no longer supported her every step of the way like he used to, and just... she built this indestructible wall between her and Giles, and based on the season 8 comics, there ain't no way it'll ever come down. *sigh* And what kills me is that when Buffy wanted to embrace him in the beginning of the season, HE was the one with the wall. He unintentionally made her feel like she was completely alone in leading this mission, whereas before he was always the one thing she could depend on to make her feel not alone (discounting the season 4 premiere). He was always more of her partner than her peon, but he's the one that put himself in that position, and then he regretted it later and he was hurt by the fact that she was treating him that way. *sigh* Season 7 Buffy/Giles. You guys were a mess. Even more than season 4 Buffy/Giles.

I really didn't mean to make this post entirely about Buffy/Giles, but there you go.

Aaaaah, that's better.
