Work blah blah blerg blah work. THAT IS MY LIFE. *sigh* Luckily I still manage to squeeze a few k-dramas in between all those blergs and blahs.

30 Day Kdrama Challenge
Day 19: Your Best Actor

Dudes, don't ask me to choose between Kim Myung Min and Kim Seung Woo. Kim Myung Min has the better acting chops for sure, but Kim Seung Woo is just so dang charming that I can't not watch him in anything (well, except for Athena, because I can't manage to stay awake long enough to see his seconds-long scenes in each episode. I am being 100% serious when I say that. If you are suffering from a bout of insomnia, watch Athena). Kim Myung Min is epic levels of talented and he is CRAZY into his roles where he will lose a dangerous amount of weight or he'll study to be a legit surgeon or he'll run half a marathon every morning, and he really does transform into whatever character he is playing. He's an oldschool method actor through and through, and I am a sucker for such dedication to one's work. Probably because I lack such dedication. So, I guess actorly-wise it's Kim Myung Min, but Kim Seung Woo could easily charm the pants off of me.

Day 20: Your Best Actress

Probably Yoon Eun Hye. I'm not even sure why, it's just that I always love her in everything that she does, and she tends to do projects that I thoroughly enjoy (Lie to Me being the exception. I was neutral towards that one at first, then I loved it, then I hated it, then I loved it again, then I didn't care about it again. So. Hmm). Kim Sun Ah is another actress that always charms me and tends to do projects that I adore. But if we're talking about truly outstanding performances, there really aren't any actresses that stick out in my head. Of course, the more meatier roles for women can probably be found in the historical dramas, and those have way too many episodes, so I haven't watched many of those.

Day 21: Your Worst Actor

Hmm, if I don't like an actor, I generally just try to forget that he exists. The only one that comes to mind is Lee Jun Ki (the second lead from My Girl). He was awful at the angst, and not all that great at the comedy, and mostly I just wanted him off my screen. I don't know if he's improved since then, but if I hear that he's the lead in something, you can bet that my interest in the movie/drama is instantly gone. I don't think he's terrible, it's just that he has trouble conveying emotion in a convincing way. He is definitely an actor who gets by almost purely on his flawlessly pretty face (seriously, dude is prettier than most of the women).

Day 22: Your Worst Actress

Kim Tae Hee. So wooden. So very wooden. But she's exceptionally beautiful, so she tends to be cast as the unattainable girl with no real personality to speak of, and she makes it work. She tried to give herself some range in My Princess, and I actually think she did a decent job in that one, but it was still a little forced and lacking in emotion in some parts, but that was definitely her best performance (it helped that she had amazing chemistry with Song Seung Hun, another not so great actor who is exceptionally beautiful).

The Days )

Warrior Baek Dong Soo is still my new favorite drama. It is perfection in every way, and you all should be watching it. LOOK AT THE EPICNESS!

Miss Ripley is just disappointing me with every new episode. Somehow it became the Yoochun/Lee Da Hae show and forgot about everyone else. And it's being way too easy on Miri. I wanted suffering, gosh darn it! For once, for once I actually want destruction and tragedy and deceit and betrayal and to see the heroes fall, but instead we get everyone taking the blame for Miri's actions and Yoochun angsting in the shower. WHY? Ugh. This show started off so awesome. I still fail to see how Miri sincerely fell in love with Yoo Hyun. No matter how many times the show tells me that she did, I won't believe it until the actors make me feel it (and LDH is way more convincing in her love for Myung Hoon, and apparently her character never loved him. WTF? WTELF?) Augh, I knew the ending would disappoint me, but I didn't know that absolutely everything after the ultimate climax would disappoint me.
firthgal: (ksw - ripley 01)
But first, work angst. Or complaining, really. )

In happier news, I watched the 2011 release of Jane Eyre, and I loved it like crazy. The tension between the leads was AMAZING, and everything about it just worked for me. I have to admit, I'm not much of a fan of the BBC miniseries from a few years ago that everyone adores so much. Not sure why, but something about it just doesn't click with me, and I've never been able to get past the second episode (I even tried again not too long ago). The 1983 miniseries version has always been my favorite adaption, which is weird because it's kind of cheap looking, but I love the performances in that one so very much, and I particularly loved the chemistry between the leads. But the 2011 movie? Good lord, the chemistry between the leads was smoking hot. I could feel their connection and their passion so vividly, even though they had considerably less interaction than the characters do in the miniseries adaptions. And I loved how the movie presented Jane's early years, interspersing them with the present and keeping them fairly brief, but still powerful. And the mood of the movie was perfection. I loved it.

Also, I finally got around to watching the last two eps of Game of Thrones, and I actually think I enjoyed those the most out of the entire season. Episode 9 actually made me cry. I didn't even know that I was emotionally involved enough with these characters to cry over one of their deaths, but I did. The scene was just executed so brilliantly that it broke my heart. And I highly enjoyed the Sansa that was reborn from that whole experience. I loved it when her eyes were finally opened to Joffrey's awfulness, and how her cattiness came out (and how she almost pushed him off the bridge. Damn it, Sandor, why did you stop her?) Speaking of, I really, really love what they've done with Sandor/Sansa. I know that they've barely interacted, but what they have had has been so subtle and so oddly sweet that I can't help but fall even harder for the ship. I know that they have a whole storyline together in the books, but from the little snippets that I've read, Sandor kind of seems like a whiny emo jerk. So I like that he is more composed in the show. Older, less emotionally unhinged, but still a killer. The show hasn't explored him as much as I would have liked, but I love that every time he does get something to do, it usually affects Sansa in some way. The handkerchief bit especially got me. How he's kind of swooping in and fulfilling her romantic hero dreams in his bumbling way without meaning to, and how the fact that it's him is throwing Sansa off. She's in this terrible situation and surrounded by so many terrible people, and here's this big, gruff, scary guy showing her some kindness. So far his care for her seems almost fatherly, so I'm interested to see where the show goes with that, because in the books it's entirely not fatherly. Also, the show seems to be skirting around his joy in killing people. In fact, had I not read snippets from the books, I would have never known that he was a psychotic killer, since they've only shown him defending people and not killing anyone (though I suppose it was implied that he killed the butcher boy, but we didn't see it, and I didn't even realize he did it till I read my f-list after that episode). Anyway, I find it interesting that the show is cutting out the seedier aspects of his personality (though maybe they'll get to that in the second season. I don't even know how much of him there is in the first book), and I honestly don't feel like Sansa is scared of him. She seems more intrigued by him than anything, and I can easily them connecting in the future. Also, as much as I detest Joffrey, I can't help but enjoy the crap out of his scenes. He's so awful, but he's so damn fun to watch. Particularly when people insult him.

MEME TIME!

30 Day Kdrama Challenge
Day 14: Your Favorite Kiss

I think we all know the answer to this one.

Yeah, it was calculated on Miri's part, but damn was it hot. These two had smoking hot chemistry from the first episode, and it just felt SO GOOD to see it come to fruition. I honestly didn't expect it, at least not so soon in the series, but it was brilliant on the part of the writers, because Miri and Myung Hoon needed the more mature relationship and she needed to take things that far for us to be totally scandalized when she starts going after Yoo Hyun, and it's just a great contrast to the innocence of her relationship with Yoo Hyun (although, I'm pretty certain that had Myung Hoon not shown up in Jeju, she would have slept with Yoo Hyun too. But Yoo Hyun thinks she's as pure and virginal as he is). Anyway, Miri and Myung Hoon were smoldering up the screen for four episodes, and it was just such a wonderful release to see it actually amount to something.

Day 15: Your Favorite Ending

You know, if there's one thing that is always disappointing about k-dramas, it's the endings. I have trouble thinking of any drama that ended in a completely satisfying or entertaining way. They spend all of their energy on the penultimate episode and then have nothing left for the very last one. I... seriously don't know. Bad Family? Maybe? Yeah, I'll go with Bad Family.

Day 16: A Kdrama you started but can’t finish
Tamra the Island, My Princess, Athena, Lie to Me, 49 Days, 19 vs 30, My Country Calls. I'm sure there are more.

Day 17: A Kdrama you’ve watched more than once

I AM SAM. I've watched that one at least 7 times. I love it. It is like crack to me. Also, Beethoven Virus, which I have watched 4 times so far.

Day 18: The Worst Kdrama that you’ve watched until the end

Playful Kiss, probably (and I loved every minute of it!)

30 Day Kdrama Challenge
Day 11: Your Favorite Dialogue

This meme is way too obsessed with dialog that I CAN'T REMEMBER. Because I can't speak Korean. Hmm... Can I just say like every bit of dialog ever from Beethoven Virus? Because I seriously loved that show's use of language. Every single inspiring speech from Kang Mae, every witty back and forth between Kang Mae and Ru Mi or Kang Mae and Gun Woo, the ahjumma drunkenly taking out all of her frustrations on Kang Mae and telling him that she can play the cello beautifully, Kang Mae defending the orchestra from the mayor, Kang Mae teaching the orchestra how to play Nella Fantasia from the heart, Kang Mae arguing with the little kid and telling him that he would burn inside the flames of Hell if he didn't listen to adults and call the Art Center the Classic Nara, the dialog between Kang Mae and Ru Mi in the last episode when she's laying down on the stage and tells him to say something honest, Ru Mi telling Kang Mae that she likes him (both times). I LOVE THIS DRAMA.

Day 12: Your Favorite Story

Now, see, this is a tough one because most k-drama plots are terribly contrived and unoriginal, but I think that's why I like them. No, seriously. I like it that way because it allows the characters to become the focus rather than some exuberant plot. While I loved IRIS, its plot was terribly confusing and I still don't even know what that show was about, but that's one where they tried to have a fancy plot and kind of failed, because that show was at its most awesome when it figured out that the characters were more important than the conspiracies. 49 Days had a great plot to start off with, and I think it would have been my answer for this one had it not focused so much in the end on the love stories. I hated the love stories in that one, which was a switch since I usually watch these shows for the romance, but I actually think this show would have been better had it focused more on the familial and platonic relationships, and went into more detail on the workings of the afterlife (I guess I was wanting a Korean take on Dead Like Me). So, yeah, that one had a lot of potential but went far too off course for me. And then there's White Tower, which had a very detailed plot and really delved into the psyche of its seedy anti-hero and the people who supported or opposed him, but I think this one had way too many scenes dealing with politics, which we had to watch in order to keep up with the plot, but were rather boring. So. But I loved the idea of this seemingly unstoppable man being taken down by the very disease that he had spent his career getting rid of in other people. And I loved how his ambition just drove him to spin so many lies and cover up so many things, to the point where he actually became a worse surgeon because of it. I like that he was unapologetic. I like that he was so amazing that he had all these admirers even though they knew that he fought dirty. I like that the show made us fall in love with such a dastardly doctor. So... yeah, White Tower. But I also want to say Bad Family, simply because that's an example of a ridiculously contrived plot that ended up being fantastic.

Day 13: Your Favorite “I Love You”

Oh gosh, do you know what's sad? Even with my k-drama OTPs, my favorites are the ones who never actually say the words "I love you" to each other. It's just, you know, implied. I guess if we're going with outright confessions, then I think it might be from Sungkyunkwan Scandal: Sun Joon confessing his love to Yoon Hee when he still thought that she was Yoon Shik. Just, the courage that took. He's a man telling another man that he loves him in a time where that was strictly forbidden. Not only that, but he's telling his best friend that he loves him, and that's what worries him more. He doesn't want to lose that friendship, but he also thinks that something is wrong with him and he doesn't want to alienate Yoon Shik, so he promises to go away, and just... that moment is filled with so much naked honesty and it's beautiful. Oh look, it's on YouTube!

I forgot that it even contained the ever popular single tear of manpain.

The Days )

In other news, everyone who watched Secret Garden should watch this video. Or if you just like watching cute boys kissing each other, then you should watch this video:

[ENG] Secret Big Bang (Secret Garden Parody) by vvipjamie

I suddenly understand the popularity of k-pop boybands now. THEY WRITE THE SLASH THEMSELVES.
firthgal: (kmm - i loba you)
Guys guys guys! Remember this post where I was pondering what the heck happened to Kim Myung Min's mouth? I remember my initial thought being false teeth, but then I was like, "Why on earth would he be wearing false teeth? Maybe he got plastic surgery!" Well, anyway, I am happy to report that this video has confirmed that it is indeed false teeth and not plastic surgery. THANK GOODNESS. Because his face is perfect just the way it is. ♥ But aww, his character has donkey teeth! I feel his plight already. :'(

Miss Ripley is taking forever to get subbed (not really. It just feels like it is, because Lie to Me got subbed in like 4 hours flat or something. I'm not sure, I just know that it was 100% subbed by the time that I got home from work, whereas Ripley is at 47%. Last week it was the opposite. Hmph). Anyway, I watched the raw, and even though I have NO CLUE what is going on, Kim Seung Woo and Lee Da Hae still managed to have wicked hot chemistry together. I am still angry that quite a lot of the fandom doesn't get Kim Seung Woo's appeal. Pfft, whatever, he's sexy in a beautifully manly kind of way where he just exudes confidence and charm and badassery without even trying. It's more about his attitude than anything else, I think. AND HIS SUITS. And his voice. And his eyes! Mostly it's the suits.

Anyway, Lie to Me. Why do I keep watching this show? It's bad then it's good then it's bad then it's good then it just stops trying altogether. But damn do I love the chemistry between the leads. *dreamy sigh* Even if the angst is starting to get a little ridiculous.

City Hunter ep 4 was okay, but not great. I don't know with this show, man. I don't know. I think I am doomed to only love the odd numbered episodes, because so far the even-numbered ones have too much romance and aaaaaaaangst. I just want explosions and martial arts and witty forms of revenge, damn it! Also, the faux father is getting on my nerves. I mean, he was pushing it when he kidnapped his dead best friend's baby in order to raise him into a killing machine, but now he's basically saying "Avenge your father's death MY WAY. If you don't, I'm going to do it first, and if you get in the way, I WILL KILL YOU. Oh yeah, and, your mother totally abandoned you. Yep! No kidnapping happened here. *whistles*" Eesh. Crazy Faux Daddy is crazy.

Kim Myung Min decided to interrupt this post. I COULDN'T STOP HIM, OKAY?

30 Day Kdrama Challenge
Day 08: Your Favorite Line/s by a Female Lead Character

I don't even know. Which is sad, because kdrama heroines give some pretty insightful/inspiring/heartfelt speeches. And yet all that pops into my mind is Best Love with Go Ae Jung telling Dokko Jin to shut his butthole because poop keeps falling out of it (dongko = butthole, and she's referring to his mouth). It's funnier in context, I swear. Is it weird that all my favorite quotes involve poop in some way?

Day 09: Your Favorite Line/s by a Male Third Wheel

Well, technically he's not a third wheel, he's more like a fourth wheel who gets a kick out of tormenting all three participants of the main love triangle, but I loved it whenever Goo Yong Ha from Sungkyunkwan Scandal would defiantly say, "I'm Goo Yong Ha." It was all he needed to say to get people to trust him/be scared of him/love him. I also loved his rare serious moment where he tries to stop Jae Shin from going out:

GAAAAAAH, I forgot how epic their love was! Oh god, the bit where he's like "If living is worth no more to you than death, then... what am I to you who's by your side?" HE LOVES HIM. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Day 10: Your Favorite Line/s by a Female Third Wheel

Erm... pretty much everything that Bu Kyung said in Bad Family. Seriously, I loved her. A lot. But I especially loved her line to Yong Ah about her friendship with Dal Gun lasting a lifetime while Dal Gun could easily divorce Yong Ah later. I don't know, it managed to be adorable instead of bitter.

The Days )

So here's the short version (caps courtesy of Dramabeans):

Miss Ripley episode 2 )

Oh, oh, I just have to add this scene:

Because it was strangely sexy. Especially when he reached over to unlock the security thingies without taking his eyes off of her. OMG, I LOVE THEM. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I hope they get to kiss at some point, because their UST is smokin'. I don't want a cop-out just because of their age gap. It's not like this is an innocent romcom, so, hopefully we'll get something, though I suspect that their romance will be very restrained (which is actually what I like, but still. I need a kiss!)

In other news, Lie to Me has turned up the angst, and I like that very much. Finally the stupid lie plot is out of the way and we can get to the real romance. Problem is, there's no plot anymore, but the plot was stupid, so maybe that's a plus. WHAT IS THE SHOW EVEN ABOUT? I don't know, but I like the kissyfuntimes and the stomach curling angst. But yeah, this drama goes from meh to good to huh? to meh to YAY! to hmm to ouch to YAY! to *cries*, so I don't even know what to expect next.

30 Day Kdrama Challenge
Day 07: Your Favorite Line/s by a Male Lead Character

"Dang. Dung. O. Ri." ~ Kang Mae from Beethoven Virus. It means "piece of shit," and he says this to a housewife who is playing the cello, and she's quite lovable and sympathetic and you know she's doing this to make herself feel significant because she's unappreciated at home, and here she is being called a piece of shit just because she's not a professional cellist. It was harsh and it makes you gasp, but the delivery was so freaking hilarious that I couldn't help but laugh. And it's probably the only line in any k-drama that I can actually remember. Kang Mae gets a lot of great lines, and he actually says a lot more brilliant insults than that, but that's the one that sticks with you, just because he said it in such a unique way. And his face. OMG, the way he curls his lip and turns up his nose as he says it. Oh, I love him.

Another memorable line is from Bad Family (not surprisingly, another Kim Myung Min drama) where Oh Dal Gun keeps saying "Do you want to smell dirt?" (meaning "I'm going to bury you alive.") It kind of becomes his catch phrase and he says it so often that it loses its initial intimidating effect, to the point where even the little kids are saying it back to him.

firthgal: (ksw - iris)
GUYS GUYS GUYS! KIM SEUNG WOO'S NEW DRAMA PREMIERES TODAY! AAAAAAAAAAH, CAN'T WAIT CAN'T WAIT CAN'T WAIT. Come on, internet! Stop going out every five minutes so that I can actually download this thing! AAAAAAAAAAH, KIM SEUNG WOO! I've been watching the previews obsessively, that is how excited I am. When I heard the premise, and the casting choices, I wasn't so sure about it. And then I read that it was a super serious melodrama, which turned me off even more. But it's KIM SEUNG WOO. I'll watch anything for that man. Although, I never did finish Athena... Anyway, after seeing the previews, I actually thought that the show looked pretty epic. So, I'm hoping it won't disappoint. I just have to be in the mindset for a melodrama and keep reminding myself that it will all end tragically. I also have to be resigned to the fact that Kim Seung Woo will get rejected by the girl for the young cutie of the month AGAIN. But I'm hoping that KSW's character is a little seedy. Or, well, not seedy, but morally gray because of his ambitions. It looks like Mickey Yoochun's character is good and noble through and through, so I'm really hoping that KSW's character is a strong contrast to him (but hopefully still noble of heart, even if he does bad things). I can kind of tell already that I probably won't like the heroine in this one, though. SHE'S GOING TO DESTROY MY MAN. IT'S GOING TO HURT. BADLY. I don't know, I don't know. We'll see. But clearly I am not going to be able to wait for the subs with this one.

30 Day Kdrama Challenge
Day 04: Your Favorite Male Third Wheel Character

You know, I am not generally a fan of the second male leads, mainly because k-dramas are so good at making me root for the main couple (which is why I usually get angry on the rare occasions when the heroine ends up with the second lead). But there is one drama where, when we met the second lead, I fell head over heels in love with him and I just couldn't understand why the heroine didn't, and that's Han Do Hoon from My Country Calls:

He's the cocky, finicky rich guy who is so vain that he thinks his quirky secretary MUST be in love with him, because who wouldn't be, am I right? Little does he know that she's actually investigating him for the FBI (or whatever the Korean equivalent of that is), because he smuggles in drugs through expensive paintings (or something, I can't quite remember the details). But he's just so oblivious in nature that it's hard for Oh Ha Na to believe that he's smart enough to pull off such a crime, and he starts to care for her in the most adorable ways, and their scenes together are so freaking hilarious, and just... he's awesome, plain and simple. He far outshines the hero, and I don't even dislike the hero! The hero is actually a good, upstanding guy who is quite sweet and really cares about Ha Na, and Ha Na is very much in love with him. But see, that's kind of the problem. He's too boring for me, especially when Do Hoon is there being hilariously vain and having wicked chemistry with the heroine. I love Do Hoon so much that I couldn't bare to see Ha Na and Jin Hyuk end up together, so I took a break from it. I'll go back to it eventually, because I do love Do Hoon so thoroughly and want to see how his story goes, but when the main couple starts bugging me as much as this one did, then it's time to stop. The sad part is that I would have loved them had Do Hoon not been so awesome.

Day 05: Your Favorite Female Third Wheel Character

Much like second male leads, I rarely like the female second leads, but occasionally we'll get a cool one like Sun Hwa from IRIS, but I think my very favorite second female lead is the adorably hilarious Ha Bu Kyung from Bad Family.

She fell in love with Oh Dal Gun's strong attitude, and I mean the swoony kind of love where he leaves her all breathless and blushing and she misinterprets their every communication as some kind of epic love moment. Seriously, they share a grand romance in her mind, while Dal Gun has NO CLUE that they are even in a relationship. And whenever Dal Gun acts distant, Bu Kyung confronts him about it and he gets all flustered because, again, he wasn't even aware that they were in a relationship, but then he thinks back and he's like, "Oh, shit." Ahahaha, OMG, I love them. I love her. She's just so loyal in her love to him, and ultimately that's what makes him appreciate her, though it's in a friendship capacity (which she gracefully accepts, though she's still holding out hope that Dal Gun will one day come to his senses and divorce Young Ah and come running to her). I also loved that there was minimal hostility between her and Young Ah, even when she became aware that Young Ah wasn't really Dal Gun's niece. This is the way that k-dramas should do second female leads. I hate hate HATE the trend where the second female leads are so driven with jealousy that they try to ruin the heroine's life. Just... that's not realistic at all. Most people just accept it and move on, you know? And I like that Bad Family had the second female lead be this delightful, sweet, caring lady who could also hold her own against overbearing characters, and ultimately accepted that her love wasn't meant to be (even if she still had hope in the back of her mind).

Day 06: Your Favorite Song from a Kdrama OST

I think it's a tossup between 노을 from My Princess and Are You Still Waiting by Hee Young from Lie to Me. Clearly I prefer k-indie over k-pop.

Guys, am I crazy, or has Kim Myung Min actually gotten a collagen injection in his lips?

Before:

ETA: IT'S FALSE TEETH! Ahahaha, I thought so at first, but then I was like, "Naaaaaah. Is it? Naaaaaah."

Every time I see a new pic of him from Pacemaker, I keep thinking "Good lord, what happened to his mouth?" At first I thought maybe he just looked off because he's gotten so skinny again, but the "Before" pic is from his My Love By My Side days, where he weighed less than 100 pounds and always looked extremely tired and sickly (which was what he was going for), so it's definitely not skinniness that's making his lips look like that. I don't know man, I don't know. He puts his body through so many transformations that I am not even sure what he looks like anymore.

30 Day Kdrama Challenge
Day 03: Your Favorite Female Lead Character

You know, the heroines in k-dramas are pretty much all the same. The bubbly, eternally optimistic poor girl who is so damn charming that absolutely everyone ever falls in love with her. Like, EVERYONE. Except for the hero's mother. And the other girl who is in love with the hero, but sometimes even she ends up falling for the irresistible heroine. And I'm not exactly complaining, because I like these ladies. They're imperfect enough to be relatable, but admirable enough to make us want to be her completely. The downside is that since these heroines are all so similar, very few of them stand out (and really, the same could be said for the heroes, but occasionally you get characters like Kang Mae or Dr. Jang who break the mold). Anyway, the quintessential version of this kind of heroine is definitely Shin Chae Kyung from Goong:

She's quirky and lovable and clumsy and hilarious and impossibly charming. Sometimes I wonder if she started the trend with this kind of heroine, because it often feels like every romcom made since this one strives to capture the essence of her and they never quite make it. They come close, but they just don't win me over quite as hard as she did. Now, obviously she wasn't the first heroine of her kind, but her character feels so fresh in Goong that they make me believe it. I just love her, and Yoon Eun Hye in general is awesome.

But the heroine that really owns my heart, the one who really stands out as something different and who I can almost put in the same category as Kang Mae, is Shin Mi Rae from City Hall:

She was just so awesome and hilarious and unyielding. She starts off being a person who's afraid to choose. She's afraid to have an opinion, basically, because she just doesn't want to get involved in politics (even when it comes to choosing lunch), but right from the start she is a person who will fight tooth and nail to get benefits for the people who need them. She's always helping out her neighbors and her friends even at the expense of herself. The people she works with think she's a pushover and they look down on her because she couldn't afford the same education that they got, but Shin Mi Rae knows her talents and she knows how to get what she wants. And then she meets the Deputy Mayor and hits on him constantly and hilarity ensues, and she manages to get accepted into a beauty pageant despite the fact that she's 36 and some shady dealings were happening between the mayor and the governer and Shin Mi Rae didn't get the money she supposedly won and Shin Mi Rae inquires about it and gets fired, and this is when she finally takes a stand. And when Shin Mi Rae takes a stand, she does not back down. It starts out as revenge but ends up being about what is right the more she learns about what the mayor has been doing for the past 7 years. And as the show goes on, Shin Mi Rae gains more and more confidence, mostly from her relationship with the Deputy Mayor, who starts out trying to take advantage of her and ends up learning from her instead.

Basically, Shin Mi Rae is the single most inspiring character I have ever come across, and yet she's still your everyday woman. She worked so freaking hard to prove that she was capable, and this is eventually what won everyone over (even the people who had literally thrown her out of the building and pushed her down repeatedly).

The Days )
firthgal: (kmm)
I just spent my morning/early afternoon catching up on the last three eps of Glee. I still find this show ridiculously annoying, and yet I CAN'T STOP WATCHING. I just can't. Even when I skip out on it for three weeks because of work. But, well, I had to watch the Kurt/Karofsky developments. I had to. They are pretty much the only thing I care about at this point, and oh the scene in the hallway where Karofsky genuinely apologized to Kurt. It was so lovely and full of tension and the actors really bring out the best performances from each other. It was just a really well done scene, and while it doesn't exactly redeem Karofsky, it made me feel his struggle. I think a lot of that is the actor, really. He's great at getting so much across with just a look or one line of dialog. And for the first time I actually felt like Kurt/Karofsky could be a legit ship in the future if Karofsky continues to make an effort to deal with his feelings. And the scene at the prom where they are walking out to the dance floor together, OMG. Just, I can feel their chemistry, their potential, their confused feelings... they are my kind of ship all the way. At least, they seem to be shaping into my kind of ship (I didn't think I'd be able to get past the bullying issue, but the prom ep really did a lot in moving them beyond that). I still don't trust this show to do romance right, though. Especially a controversial one that needs to be taken slowly. And, well, Kurt seems to be very happy with Blaine right now, and it was just lovely seeing him being so full of joy during the dance at the end. So, I'm not quite sure where the show stands on Kurt/Karofsky, and Karofsky only gets a few minutes every few episodes, so it's not like the show will ever go into depth with them. But even so, I think it's probably the best relationship this show has done all season, which is probably due more to the acting than the writing, if I'm honest. Seriously, that Karofsky kid is pretty darn good. I'm just not used to quality acting on Glee! Anyway, Rachel/Finn still sucks (Quinn/Finn will always own my heart in that insanely boring love triangle). Will/Emma still bugs the crap out of me. Jesse is still the only person other than Will who can really match Rachel's voice, and Jesse/Rachel amuses me rather than making me wanna barf. Sue is getting more and more ridiculous and inconsistent, and I miss when she was my favorite. The show just can't decide what to do with her anymore. I'm pretty sure all three eps made me cry, especially the funeral one.

Alright, enough about Glee. Last night I watched ep 5 of Lie to Me, and I am even more in love with the show. The Dramabeans crowd seems to be really down on the show, but I find that I tend to disagree a lot with the views on that blog anyway (doesn't stop me from loving the crap out of that blog, though. Good gosh, I am addicted). But yeah, they generally thought that the ep was boring and they're about ready to bow out, but this ep left me giddy and breathless and dying for more. I do agree that the plot is taking too long and is rather flimsy, but the show finally got moving on the love story, which is what really drew me in. She is messing with his head and he is trying so hard not to be affected by her. Oh gosh, the scene on the bench, LOVE. And the scene in the cafe where he's trying to act all nonchalant so that he could properly reject her and then he gets disappointed/embarrassed when she never brings up the almost kiss. I love that he is already obsessing over her, while she generally just thinks its fun to mess with him and isn't really reading much into things. I wasn't expecting that, to be honest. I thought for sure she'd fall first, so this was a nice surprise.

Anyway, I'm really, really loving Lie to Me. On Dramabeans the commenters keep talking about how much better Baby-faced Beauty and Romance Town are, but, ugh, I couldn't get past the first two eps with both of those dramas. I do want to try and watch more of BFB, though, because it definitely felt like it had potential to get better, but Romance Town was just plain awful. I seriously don't get the appeal with that one.

30 Day Kdrama Challenge
Day 02: Your Favorite Male Lead Character

Kang Gun Woo Maestro, aka Kang Mae (Beethoven Virus)

He's the greatest. He just is. He's rude and egotistical and brutally honest and impossibly demanding. He just fails at social interaction and he knows it. It's not that he means to, it's just the way he is and he's very unapologetic for it. Of course, what he lacks in social graces he more than makes up for in talent and dedication to his craft. He's brilliant. But he's a perfectionist who knows he isn't perfect, and this is probably his greatest downfall. He wants to be the best, but he knows he never will be because he just can't make a connection with people. He's had a hard life and he convinced himself that he only has himself to depend on, and that he doesn't need anyone else. He's afraid to let anyone in because the human heart is unpredictable, and he only likes things that are unchangeable, hence his passion for classical music. But when he meets Ru Mi and Gun Woo and the rest of the ragtag orchestra, he starts to depend on them for love and friendship and acceptance little by little. He learns that he has a great capacity to care for other people, and that he likes being cared for in return. He likes having people to call his own, basically. But see, he doesn't know how to properly express his emotions and things get muddled up and then he gets hurt and then he gets scared and then he either runs away or chases everyone else away. He's flawed and lovely and brilliant in every way. I love him so damn much.

30 Day Kdrama Challenge
Day 01: Your Favorite Kdrama

This is kind of a tough one to answer, because I don't think I have just one. Awhile back I would have said IRIS, but truth be told, I've only ever watched that drama once. But it was the first drama that really made me obsessed, like crazy shipping obsessed and wanting fanfic but not being able to find any, and even though the drama itself contains really whacked out logic and not the greatest editing and a really confusing plot, I love it. I love it to pieces and will always remember it fondly, and it was responsible for igniting my love of Mr. Kim Seung Woo.

And then there's Sign, which I consumed in all of 2 days or something crazy like that, and I was just in mad, mad love with everything about it, from the sometimes over the top acting to the sometimes over the top plot to the adorable OTPs, I loved it. And it was probably the first drama I watched where the love stories were very secondary to the overall plot, which made the main OTP very subtle, which I freaking ate up. I love subtext ships more than anything, and with this show, it was both subtexty and very much canon, so I couldn't resist, and I obsessively watched all their scenes a billion times before moving on to the next ep, and I anticipated the very last episode with so much glee and excitement, and I think this drama would have been my #1 favorite by a landslide had it not been for the ending. That damned ending that ripped my heart out and tore it to pieces and made it so that I couldn't even rewatch the damn show with the same enjoyment that I had before. Sometimes an ending can ruin the greatness of the previous 19 episodes, and this one kind of did. Not that the ending was bad. It made sense for the characters, and even the tone of the show wasn't misleading on that front, so it shouldn't have hurt me the way it did. But... well, the show kind of briefly tricked me into thinking that all would end happily. HOW STUPID CAN I BE?

If we're going by how many times I've watched a drama, then I Am Sam would win, because I've watched that thing so many times that I pretty much know it by heart. It's ridiculous and full of every k-drama romcom cliche there is, but... it's a student/teacher romance. Where they're forced to live together. And the guy is adorably oblivious. And the girl is totally kickass. And even though it contains all of the typical elements of a typical rom-com, it's kind of anything but typical. The hero is bumbling and meek and not all that pretty but somehow terribly charming, and the girl is young and beautiful and rich and full of attitude, and it really turns into an ensemble show along the way and is actually quite touching despite all the crackiness, and it's just a really lovely drama. I wouldn't call it good, exactly. Just... entertaining and sweet and the drama that I always go back to for comfort. It's a guilty pleasure, for sure, but it's almost like the drama was tailor-made for me, I love it so much.

And then there's Beethoven Virus, which I am still in the honeymoon phase with, so I don't even know if it counts, but I'm already on my third or fourth watch, and it's one where I always end up watching whole episodes as opposed to certain scenes, because I just love everyone and everything, and I love how the ensemble is just as important to Kang Mae's development as Gun Woo and Ru Mi are. It's just such a beautiful and delightful and touching and well done drama, and it manages to make classical music ridiculously exciting, and it has the greatest dialog ever. Just, the things that come out of Kang Mae's mouth are brilliant. But it also has its frustrating points, like its repetitiveness near the end, and the two steps forward one step back in the development of Kang Mae (but Kim Myung Min played it so well that it really didn't bother me too much). And it didn't exactly end how I would have liked it to, but it also left things open to interpretation, which I liked. But yeah, this one's definitely a contender for the #1 spot in my heart. The good far outweighs the bad with this drama, and Kang Mae is such a great character that he really makes this show for me. He's probably one of my top favorite fictional characters ever.

The Days )

Speaking of Beethoven Virus, I noticed last night that something was really off about Kim Myung Min's face as Kang Mae when I was watching it. Now, clearly I didn't notice it before because prior to this drama I had never even seen Kim Myung Min, but two dramas and three movies later, I totally noticed that his eyebrows are done weird as Kang Mae. They're shorter and sleeker and... well, weird. I just can't get used to it now! They messed with his beautiful eyebrows! It distracts me completely.

You know, if the show made Gwen/Arthur as epic as this vid made it:

I would probably ship the heck out of them. But, you know, in the actual show, Merlin is there being all epic with Arthur, which makes it hard to appreciate this Arthur/Gwen business. AND THEN THERE'S LANCELOT, BEING ALL DREAMY WITH HIS HYPERBOLIC PICKUP LINES.

Oooooooh, Lancelot, you win every time. Why? Because you've made Gwen feel like a princess right from the start. I think that's what will always, always sway me towards Lancelot/Gwen, even though he only shows up for one episode a season and TOTALLY LEFT LAST TIME WITHOUT SAYING GOODBYE. JERK. And yet, I feel Gwen's love for Lancelot so much more than I feel whatever it is that she feels for Arthur. I am so, so sorry Arthur, but at least you still have Merlin, right? Right? RIGHT?

I just finished the third book of The Immortals series. SO MUCH SUBTEXT, HOLY CRAP. DAINE IS NUMAIR'S WEAKNESS. NUMAIR WON'T LEAVE WITHOUT HER. DAINE DESTROYED AN ENTIRE KINGDOM TO AVENGE HIS SUPPOSED DEATH. DAINE WAS TOTALLY JEALOUS OF VARICE. NUMAIR WAS TOTALLY JEALOUS OF KADDAR. NUMAIR CALLED DAINE PRETTY AND WORRIED ABOUT THE DAY SHE'D GET MARRIED. Oh, them. They are in love. Love love love. Also, I kind of ship Daine/Rikash? You know, if Rikash didn't stink of rotting flesh and had man bits instead of bird bits (and if Numair didn't exist), THEY WOULD BE SO AWESOME TOGETHER. I just love how they have this begrudging respect for each other that somehow turned into a begrudging liking of each other where they can even laugh together and think about each other in a way that doesn't involve murder. It's quite lovely! But, you know, Numair is her man.

I am going to go ahead and finish this meme up, because I predict that I will be obsessing over Vampire Diaries come Thursday and Merlin come Saturday and will completely forget about finishing this thing, so:

Day 24 - A scene that made you angry

Honestly, I can't think of one! This show pretty consistently makes me happy. (reading comments to secrets about the show on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets, however, makes me pretty damn angry. Yes, there was more Jeff/Annie wank today. No, I don't understand how the Jeff/Annie fans are such an abomination against humanity. Clearly these people have been in extremely tame fandoms before they got to this one, because I've always felt that this one was nearly wank-free. Heck, even The Office fandom is less tame than this one!)

Day 25 - Something that happened that you wish didn’t

The first few episodes, where Jeff is a total douche who just wants to get into Britta's pants? Yeah, I hated that, and it almost made me quit the show. But then it started utilizing its ensemble and I fell in mad, mad love. Oh, also? I was not fond of The Art of Discourse, namely the duh-off scene. I know that I am in the very small minority on this one, but ugh, I hated that ep so freaking much.

Day 26 - Something that didn’t happen that you wish did

Ever since reading this interview, I've been wondering what it would've been like had they gone with the whole "Let’s do a finale where it seems like we’re playing this love triangle and then just out of left field let’s just try something like Britta goes to his apartment door and opens it up and Annie answers it and it's clear that she was having sex." If the fandom is in this much of an uproar over a kiss, JUST IMAGINE THE INSANITY THAT WOULD COME FROM JEFF/ANNIE SEX. I don't really wish it had gone this way, I'm just curious about the impact that it would have had. With just a kiss, they can still keep Jeff/Annie somewhat innocent and keep playing off of their UST, whereas with the other option it would pretty much be saying, "Hey, we went there, we solved their UST, now we can move on." So, I guess I'm happier with how things actually turned out, but, you know, I AM INTRIGUED.

Day 28 - What you want for Season Two

Epic hilarity. Some Jeff/Annie adorableness (yeah, suck it, f!s commenters!). FIELD TRIP SHENANIGANS. WHY HAVE THEY NOT GONE A FIELD TRIP YET?

Day 29 - What your overall opinion was of Season One

IT WAS SO SUPER EPICALLY AWESOME IN EVERY WAY. Well, it got off to a slow start, but once it hit its stride, it was wonderful. No show does parodies/reference episodes better than this one does.

1. Just finished watching MacGruber for a second time. STILL HILARIOUS. Like, seriously dudes, this film is the best. (okay, that was an exaggeration, BUT I REALLY ENJOYED IT)

2. I've finally bothered to look at the fall TV lineup and watched trailors for every single new show on ABC/NBC/FOX/CBS/CW, and... there were only about three that looked enticing:

What I may or may not be watching this season )

So, yeah, full schedule. Which will probably dwindle back down to just my regular shows by the middle of October, because it's just too hard to keep up with all of that. But I like to sample the goods! And I am already feeling a weird affection for Outlaw just from the preview. I don't know what it is. I'll be so crushed if I don't enjoy it.

Any new cable shows that I should check out? Other than Boardwalk Empire and The Walking Dead, I haven't heard about any.

It was just so touching that I could not stop the tears from surfacing. It still gives me goosebumps every time I watch it, particularly during the bit where Abed and Troy are singing the chorus together. I don't know, I know that that sequence is ridiculous, but it was just so darn heartwarming.

Totally random observation:

I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW MANY MEN SHIP JEFF/ANNIE. Oh my god, all these dudes on [livejournal.com profile] milady_milord that I've been reading with female voices in my head! I mean, it all makes sense now, because their fics and way of talking are more precise and less flowery and/or fangirly, BUT WHAT THE HELL? It always shocks me when I find dudes in shipping comms. Like, it took me ages to get used to all the dudes on the Jim/Pam shipping website, and then Sheldon/Penny had quite a few male shippers too, but the Jeff/Annie male shippers are just plain surprising (and delightful! It makes me feel less crazy! Because, you know, most dudes don't normally ship sitcom characters and write frilly fanfic about them, so clearly Jeff/Annie has some kind of irresistible pull, because if dudes were just into Alison Brie's boobs, they don't really need fanfiction to help their obsession along, do they?).

JEFF AND ANNIE = EPIC LOVE, OH YES. SO, SUCK IT, DAN HARMON, WITH YOUR "EVIL KISS" TALKS. No, no, I still love Dan. I totally get what he was saying, BUT THAT KISS WASN'T EVIL. IT WAS NOT THE "EASY BAD GUY" PATH. It was born of two people feeling so completely comfortable and right with each other, and to take that meaning away from us... SO NOT COOL. I can take him calling us high school girls who want to kiss Joel McHale (even though neither of those things apply to me, but I don't blame him for coming to that conclusion), I can even take the pseudo-incestuous comment because, hey, look at my other ships, IT'S KIND OF MY THING, but oh, oh, I cannot take his comment about the kiss being the evil, bad guy thing to do. It wasn't the smartest thing to do, I'll grant him that, but Annie has been the one to continually bring out the best in Jeff, and he enjoys that feeling, and why is it evil to act on feelings for someone who is so very good for him? Again, yeah, it wasn't smart, considering the timing and rashness of it all, but it wasn't evil either. And it certainly wasn't the easy path, it was just the path that felt right in that moment, BECAUSE HE TOTALLY HAS FEELINGS FOR ANNIE. Feelings that could potentially lead to love, the true, sappy kind that he never thought he was capable of but always kind of wanted, because we all know that deep down, under all that cynicism, Jeff is a big old sap who enjoys being proven wrong.

1. I have finally watched Inception. My conclusion is that it was neither mind-blowing nor thought-provoking, but it was wicked entertaining (which was basically my reaction to Dark Knight, too). So, I enjoyed it. I particularly loved the fact that Ken Watanabe was in so much of the film. I get in dreamy eyes mode every time that man is on my screen, I swear. I now have a strong urge to watch The Last Samurai and Memoirs of a Geisha, both of which I have already seen far too many times, but... you know, KEN WATANABE. Shipping-wise, I am Cobb/Ariadne all the way, baby. I am actually shocked that this does not seem to be fandom's preferred het ship. WHAT WERE YOU ALL WATCHING? SERIOUSLY. A girl doesn't follow a man into the very depths of his freakish subconscious for nothing, you know. SHE WAS TOTALLY INTO HIM. Anyhow, the film itself was pretty awesome, particularly once it got to the Fischer storyline and all the action started happening.

2. I am usually not a proponent of spastic fanvids (they hurt my poor, poor eyes), but this one is quite charming:

I HAD NO IDEA THAT THESE THINGS EXISTED. A couple nights ago I spent hours watching Literal Videos. *sigh* Total Eclipse of the Heart is also pretty hilarious, as is Love is a Battlefield (particularly once it gets to the dancey bit).

4. The 30 Day Community Meme
Day 19 - Favorite friendship

TROY AND ABED.

Day 20 - Favorite guest star

Oh, John Michael Higgins, definitely. PROFESSOR WHITMAN. ♥ He gets all the greatest lines.

1. I just signed up for [livejournal.com profile] camelotsolstice! Again! Apparently I am super desperate for Uther/Morgana fic, because I am putting myself through that deadline and insecurity angst for the second year in a row. I don't think that I even posted last year's fic anywhere but that comm. AUGH, UTHER/MORGANA, DO YOU SEE THE THINGS I DO FOR YOU? I am desperately hoping that someone will write me a long, angsty U/M fic of some kind. Heck, it doesn't even have to be long! And hopefully I will get mine written ahead of time this year (pfft, like that's gonna happen).

2. So, Modern Warfare is winning for best ensemble ep over on [livejournal.com profile] community_tv. Am I the only one who thinks that that is grossly unfair? The ensemble was whole for all of three minutes in that ep. And then everyone but Britta and Jeff were gone for the last half. Clearly Contemporary American Poultry should be winning, because no other ep utilized the ensemble as well as that one did (though Comparative Religion comes pretty close).

3. The 30 Day Community Meme
Day 18 - Least favorite ship

I think this is a tossup between Jeff/Britta and Shirley/Pierce. I just don't dig these dynamics very much (though I do enjoy Jeff/Britta snark in small doses)

firthgal: (true blood - bill sookie)
1. I should never read the comments to True Blood secrets, because they are all obscenely full of Bill and Bill/Sookie hate. WHAT THE HELL? Look guys, I know that I am lame. I don't need to be reminded of this during every single True Blood conversation ever. But you know what? I just don't find Eric as awesome when he's with Sookie. I just don't. Also? ASkars is not all that appealing to me. I DON'T FIND HIM TO BE THAT PRETTY, I'M SORRY. I love Eric and all, but I do not think that the True Blood sun rises and sets with him, you know? And Eric/Sookie? The show just fails at selling me on this pairing. I don't feel it from Sookie's side, I don't find their chemistry to be as hot as the show thinks it is, and... well... I'm used to Bill and Sookie's lameness! Don't let Eric get dragged down into the very depths of their epic cheesery! Just don't do it! Bill is meant to be lame and ridiculous and flustered, while Eric is supposed to remain aloof and badass and snarky. I don't care that the books go with Eric/Sookie. If the show fails to develop them, they should not just be haphazardly thrown together simply because the ship happens in the book. I like that Bill/Sookie is the annoying OTP that just won't end. Without it, I don't even know what this show would be. I like their epic moments of cheese and angst. I like their numerous failed attempts at domesticity. I like that Alan Ball has a boner for Bill Compton, because you know what? So do I. I enjoy watching Bill's struggle to constantly do the right thing and seeing it all blow up in his face. I love that Bill gets sweet moments and evil moments and creepy moments and hilarious moments. I love that the show chose to show him in a better light than the books did (though, I haven't read the books, so I'm just going by the fandom here, and the fandom has a very strong bias against Book!Bill for a very specific reason that I am so, so glad that the show chose to throw away). Anyway, what I'm saying is, even though everyone and their mother (mine included) is an ASkars/Eric fangirl, I just... I love Bill. I love him, and I don't think that the fandom gives him enough credit. Seriously, how can so many people hate this tragic dude?

2. MOST EPIC FANVID OF ANYTHING EVER:

"Epic" in every sense of the word. Good god, I don't think I'd ever have the patience to make a 9 minute fanvid. And dang, dudes, this one was fantastic all the way through. I CANNOT STOP WATCHING IT. Oh, boys. Oh, Merlin. IS IT SEPTEMBER 11TH YET?

3. DAMOOOOOOOOOOON!

4. My email notifications for Yahoo haven't been working for a week, AND IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY. I am now obsessively checking my email every five minutes. You never notice how useful something is until it stops working. *hmph*

5. The 30 Day Community Meme
Day 15 - Favorite Señor Chang moment

CHANG YUN-FAT, BIYATCHES. I love love love Chang (in small doses), and this was by far my favorite moment. He brought the badass, the hilarity, and the insanity. AND HE WAS PARODYING CHOW YUN-FAT. That alone endears him to me forever and ever.

Day 16 - Favorite other/guest character moment

I don't know, I don't know why this is my favorite, but it makes me smile so hard. I think I am just a complete sucker for goofy yet completely sweet serenades. And Vaughn totally won me over in this ep. I kind of hate his "Britta is a B" song, if I'm honest, and it turned me off of the character, but then this happened, and just... it was beautiful, and it made me fall in love with Vaughn, and I so totally didn't mind that Annie/Vaughn opposed my OTP, because, well, THEY ARE SO DAMN CUTE, LOOK AT THEM.

Day 17 - Favorite ship

If you don't know the answer to this, YOU HAVEN'T BEEN READING MY JOURNAL.

Yeah, I linked to my own fanvid. I HAVE NO SHAME.
